About

I’ve been playing Warhammer 40,000 on and off for over 20 years, but I’ve only started playing in tournaments since mid 2009.

It began when I was eight years old, and at that age saw Warhammer 40,000 as a game in the sense of imagined battles with toy soldiers.  However, over the years (and particularly in the latest edition) I have come to realise that the imagined battles are merely a veneer that overlays an abstract strategic game that can be played as logically as a very pure theory game, like chess.

I hope that as part of this process I’ll be able to retain my love of the imaginative overlay of the game (the painting, modelling and backstory elements), but be able to disentangle my gameplaying decisions from this overlay.  In simple terms I want to be able to enjoy the fluff, but also play the underlying abstract game to the best of my ability.

This blog maps out the process of going from being a casual player, to a matrix gaming, number crunching, cheesetacular tournament player.
